Barilaro gets the ball rolling for Googong Sports and Recreation Club
A sports and recreation club at Googong with bistro and function facilities looks set to become a reality with NSW Government funding being announced for planning.
The Member for Monaro John Barilaro said $100,000 will be contributed to get the project off the ground.
“In the next 15 years, Googong is expected to host a population of about 18,000, and as Googong grows, so does the need for facilities,” said Mr Barilaro.
“Promoting an active outdoor life style is really important and having a dedicated sports and recreation club for all codes to enjoy will be a benefit to the local community.”
Pending approval, it’s expected construction of the Googong Sports and Recreation Club will start in 2022.
The development will be in two stages and estimated to cost a total of around $10m.
“We want to create a community orientated club for all sporting bodies in Googong,” said Googong Sports and Recreation Club secretary Franca Jones.
“We’ve been working on this idea for the last six years. The purpose behind the facility is to get kids back on the playing fields, encourage them to stay active and off the streets and allow that to happen within their home town.”
The club will include a bistro, licensed club area, function room and change rooms for both men and women.
Profits from the club will be distributed across local sporting bodies.
The Developers of Googong, a joint venture between Mirvac and Peet Limited, will dedicate a parcel of land for the development.
