SNOWY SCHEME MARKS 70 YEARS
Member for Monaro John Barilaro and local MLC Bronnie Taylor today joined the celebrations marking seventy years of one of the most iconic engineering feats in Australia – the Snowy Hydro Scheme.
Joining locals, community groups and ex-workers in Cooma, Mr Barilaro said the 70th anniversary of the Scheme is an historic milestone not only for the region but Australia.
“Seven decades ago our region was changed forever because of the mighty Snowy Scheme,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Over the years the Scheme has provided endless opportunities to people in the Monaro, as well as the State.
“With work on Snowy 2.0 beginning earlier this year those possibilities will flow on and the region will continue to thrive,” Mr Barilaro said.
Minister Taylor said she was excited to mark this occasion and join the community in looking back on the history of the Scheme.
“From food on the table of the Snowy workers, to the fuel it generates to power our homes and businesses, the Snowy Scheme is woven into the fabric of the Cooma community,” Minister Taylor said.
Mr Barilaro thanked the Snowy Scheme for its contribution to multiculturalism in Australia.
“Because of Snowy Scheme this region is considered the birthplace of multiculturalism in Australia. That legacy continues to live on in the local community and across Australia.”
Mr Barilaro also pointed to the continued opportunities the Snowy Scheme is providing to regional NSW through the Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund.
“With NSW in the worst drought it’s ever been it is important we continue to invest in our State’s future.
“This fund and the bold legacy left by the Snowy Scheme is delivering big picture projects that generations before us have dreamed of,” Mr Barilaro said.
