SAFER TRAVEL WITH MAJOR KOSCIUSZKO ROAD UPGRADES COMPLETE IN TIME FOR SNOW SEASON
Friday, 8 June 2018
Motorists heading to the snow this ski season will experience improved travel times, with the Member for Monaro John Barilaro today announcing the opening of key additional lanes along Kosciuszko Road in time for the start of the 2018 snow season.
“Just in time for our busiest part of the year, the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is officially opening a fourth lane along Kosciuszko Road between Barry Way and Alpine Way as well as a brand new overtaking lane just outside of Cooma,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Anyone who has travelled on Kosciuszko Road during the ski season will be familiar with the pinch point in Jindabyne, with significant queuing at the Barry Way roundabout.
“The project between Barry Way and Alpine Way is being carried out in stages to reduce disruptions to the community and is a great example of the work of this government to improve the lives of all road users.”
Mr Barilaro welcomed the start of the 2018 snow season this weekend and noted that the important transport and tourist route is about to get a lot busier.
“Around 1500 vehicles travel on Kosciuszko Road between Barry Way and Alpine Way each day and this number increases to about 4000 during the ski season,” he said.
Roads and Maritime Service have also installed temporary traffic lights on the roundabout to help manage traffic flow during the snow season. Cameras have been installed to monitor traffic queues and temporary traffic lights can be activated when required to help reduce queuing on Barry Way.
“Crews have worked hard since October 2017 to have this new lane open to traffic for the ski season, and after winter they will return to complete the entire project,” Mr Barilaro said.
“Work still to be carried out includes the installation of roadside drainage, safety barriers, gravel overlay and a final seal of the road.”
A date for this work to take place is yet to be fixed and the community will be kept informed.
Full completion of the project is expected in May next year, weather permitting.
“I’m thrilled to announce that in addition to the fourth lane near Jindabyne, the new 1.5 kilometre westbound overtaking lane on Kosciuszko Road near Coolringdon and Slacks Creek is also complete and open,” Mr Barilaro added.
“It is fantastic to announce motorists heading to and from the snow on Kosciuszko Road this ski season will experience faster and safer journeys.”
Mr Barilaro said work on the project started in October last year and crews have been at it around the clock so it would be finished in time for the snow season.
The NSW Government has funded these projects as part of a $20 million package of work to improve traffic efficiency and safety on the Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road.
