New Snowy Advisory Committee to be appointed

Monday, 11 December 2017

A new Snowy Advisory Committee will commence working with the NSW Government next year to advise on Snowy environmental flows and better represent community interests.

Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the new committee structure strikes the right balance between community interests, technical expertise and Government representation.

“The new committee will be instrumental in securing the health and ecology of the iconic Snowy River, and means river management decisions are made with the direct input of the broader community.

“The make-up of this committee is really important for the local community and everyone who relies on a healthy Snowy River, and nominations will be called shortly, with the committee to operational in the New Year.

Minister for Regional Water, Niall Blair said the make-up of the new committee will have representatives from both New South Wales and Victoria.

“The committee will ensure all stakeholders are represented fairly as well as allowing for additional specialised expertise to be incorporated into the committee when required,” Mr Blair said.

The establishment of the new committee would also coincide with the transfer of responsibility for Snowy environmental water management to the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH).

The transfer of the Snowy’s environmental water management to OEH brings it into line with the rest of NSW’s environmental water holdings.

The formation of the new Snowy Advisory Committee, together with the transfer of operational management to OEH, will allow greater transparency of environmental water strategies in the Snowy Mountains and boost the health of the Snowy River even further.
