INFANTS SCHOOL BUILDING TRANSFORMING FOR ALL TO ENJOY
Tuesday, 18 December 2018
The Bombala Infants School Building on Wellington Street will soon be transformed into a home for local artists, with room to serve as a community facility for all of Bombala.
The Member for Monaro John Barilaro today announced $207,430 for a major upgrade which will turn the historic building into the Bombala Arts and Innovation Centre.
Earlier this year, the NSW Government gifted the building to the Snowy Monaro Regional Council and committed to helping the council upgrade the facility to benefit the entire community.
“The Infants School Building is a part of Bombala’s history, a beautiful building, and the perfect home for local artists,” Mr Barilaro said.
Mr Barilaro said the funding will be used to refurbish the building, including an internal fitout, new heating throughout, renovated toilets, an all accessible ramp, car parking, new carpet, pest control work and stormwater drainage upgrades.
“A huge renovation will soon be underway, but the heritage of the building will be at the forefront and preserved so the history of the Bombala Infants School building can be remembered,” he said.
“Last year, I met with local artists and community advocates, who expressed their passion for the building and the need for an artists’ hub which could also serve as a community space.
“Today I’m thrilled to be taking the next step in making this happen. I can’t wait to see work start and see the community enjoying this space once again.”
Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor John Rooney thanked Mr Barilaro for the funding.
“Council is thrilled to see the vision for the Bombala Arts and Innovation Centre Building coming to life,” Mr Rooney said.
“These much needed upgrades will ensure the facility meets the requirements of the local community, providing the perfect shared space currently desired by a number of Bombala residents.”
