Major funding for Majors Creek

John Barilaro meets with hardworking RFS volunteers

Member for Monaro John Barilaro today announced $188,470 for the maintenance of the Majors Creek Gully fire trail.

“Last summer’s disastrous fires and unprecedented weather means that there is no room for complacency when it comes to preparing for the next bushfire season,” Mr Barilaro said.

“The next fire season will roll around soon enough and this funding will allow the Majors Creek community to have a good fire trail in place.

“I’m glad our region has secured funding to enhance local bushfire mitigation efforts and help us prepare for the warmer months.”

Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant said the funding investment had been made to help give the local community the ability to safely respond to future bushfires.

“In this round of bushfire mitigation funding, the Government has prioritised maintenance works on fire trails in some of the state’s most difficult to access areas,” Mr Grant said.

“Our firefighters need to be able to get to the fires before they reach properties and threaten lives, and the best way to ensure they can do this is to have a properly maintained network of fire trails.”

Mr Barilaro said it’s important to make time to prepare for bushfire season and ensure you have a bushfire survival plan.

“You can never be too prepared. When a bushfire strikes you need to have a plan, it could be the difference between saving your property and more importantly your life,” Mr Barilaro said.

The Rural Fire Service has four steps to get ready for bushfires:

• Talk with your family about what to do if a bushfire threatens your home;
• Prepare your home and get ready for bushfire season;
• Know the bushfire alert levels; and
• Keep all the bushfire information numbers, websites and the smartphone app.

The Majors Creek Gully fire trail funding has been provided under the Commonwealth’s $15 million National Bushfire Mitigation Programme, $4 million of which has been made to NSW.
